MOMA Trip

During this trip to the Museum of moving images, I got to learn a lot about not only the history of filmmaking but also about how technology has advanced throughout the years. One of the exhibits that really stood out to me was the sound effect replacement in a sequence from the film The Terminator. Often times while watching movies it seems as if the sound effects were added seamlessly and with relative ease. However, during this demo, we got to see that the sound effects designer’s work is not easy, and rather requires a lot of decision making and meticulous attention to detail. For example, when we were watching the demo, some sounds sounded really similar to each other when isolated but when put back into the context of the movie, they made a huge impact on how the sequence played out. There were also some sound choices that changed this intense action scene into an almost parody by putting in some goofy wheel turn sounds and exaggerated explosions. The differe...

Analysis of Age of Innocence

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2v9PApoaqa4        I chose this scene from the Age of Innocence due to its complexity and Martin Scorsese's use of visual and filmmaking elements to tell us the story in a subtle manner. The scene starts with a long shot of Madame Olenska walking up the stairs, this establishes her as the subject of the scene as well as showing the viewer how impactful her entrance will be on the rest of the party. The music is also used in a great manner that hints the viewer into the reactions of the party once she enters. The next few shots show us what is happening in the room and we are even given a perspective shot from both Olenska and Newland Archer. This allows the viewer to see the party from the individual's perspective and it gives us insight into how important Newland and Olenska are to each other. The best part of this scene is the walk over by Olenska over to Newland who is across the room. Scorsese depicts Olenska as the center of th...

What I Hear

I recently decided to walk through and observe the area of Chinatown in the city. It is a place that I have come to before, but never with the objective of observing the space. I decided to walk around the streets on a Tuesday between the time of 1pm-2pm. While walking through these streets, I realized that there are many characteristics that the space possesses. To start, the the languages that I heard while observing were unique to that space. It showed me how much the space has been influenced by the culture of its residents. Another important factor is that the foot traffic of the area is higher than most parts of the city. Therefore, it was easy for me to get distracted in the many different conversations and sounds that I was hearing. However, I realized shortly that this is just another aspect of the space I am observing, at least for this specific time. The conversations and the sounds of the customers inside the stores all seemed to just be noise at the st...

Artist Statement

During my years in high school I realized how important films are to the culture and viewpoints of society. Many of our thoughts, ideals, and opinions have been shaped by what we see in films and television. Although some of the things shown in films help us put some people in a good light, often times the portrayals are demeaning to many groups of people. We all make many generalizations about the people we meet and about societies and groups as a whole. This all comes from our subconscious mind, which has been greatly affected by the content we watched as children. In the real life however we find out that many of these generalizations are not true, yet they are still portrayed in films today. As an artist I would like to focus on changing many of the stereotypes portrayed in films today. I believe that we as a society can greatly benefit by having the content we watch reflect the reality of how people are rather than working off stereotypes. I would like to make f...
