Artist Statement
During my years in high school I realized how important films are
to the culture and viewpoints of society. Many of our thoughts, ideals, and
opinions have been shaped by what we see in films and television. Although some
of the things shown in films help us put some people in a good light, often
times the portrayals are demeaning to many groups of people. We all make many
generalizations about the people we meet and about societies and groups as a
whole. This all comes from our subconscious mind, which has been greatly
affected by the content we watched as children. In the real life however we
find out that many of these generalizations are not true, yet they are still
portrayed in films today.
As an artist I would like to focus on changing many of the stereotypes
portrayed in films today. I believe that we as a society can greatly benefit by
having the content we watch reflect the reality of how people are rather than
working off stereotypes. I would like to make films that deal with issues such
as racism, religion, and politics. I would like to do all of this without using
any generalizations that I have grown up with. Rather I want to make a film
that truly reflects the society of today.
